A lthough life certainly hasn’t returned to normal yet, sports leagues are doing their best to bring the competition and entertainment many turn to for a sense of normalcy (and fun!) back to fans’ TV screens. Prioritizing safety, most events remain audienceless, with some leagues even going so far as to enter into bubbles for weeks at a time so they can play a series of games with minimal virus spread. We’ve compiled a list of sports events you can tune into in the coming weeks; have a look below and stay tuned for more league reopening updates as the NBA, WNBA, MLB and more aim to return at the end of July.
MLS is back, and they’re celebrating with the aptly-titled MLS is Back tournament. Hunkered down in a “bubble” at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, all 26 MLS teams will compete over the course of 54 matches, with a group stage followed by knockout rounds. Fans can check out the complete schedule and broadcast information for the tournament, taking place from July 8 to August 11, here.
Although there’s still no in-person attendance, the PGA has fully resumed and the stakes are high! The PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, taking place at the Detroit Golf Club, will have star golfers including Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau competing for a $7,500,000 purse. Occurring over the weekend of July 2-5, the tournament will be broadcast on CBS and the GOLF Channel.
After many cancellations and postponements, Formula 1 is finally back with the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. Taking place on July 5 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria, Austria, participating drivers include Lewis Haimlton, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Valtteri Bottas and more. The Sytrian Grand Prix (aka Steiermark GP) will be soon to follow at the same location on July 12. Fans in the US can tune in via ESPN2.
Relocated from Perth, Australia to the newly-created “Fight Island” facility in Abu Dhabi, UFC 251: Usman vs. Burns will feature a main-event fight between current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns. Current UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway will go against each other in the co-main fight. For the title bout, bantamweights fighters Petr Yan and José Aldo will compete. Former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champions Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajuna will go against each other again in a women’s strawweight rematch, while flyweights Amanda Ribas and Paige VanZant will fight in the other strawweight bout. It all goes down on PPV on July 12.
The NASCAR/INDYCAR crossover event over the July 4 weekend is set to make motorsports history as the first time Nascar and IndyCar races are held at the same track (the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) on the same weekend. On Saturday (July 4), it will be pedal to the metal starting with the IndyCar GMR Grand Prix, followed by the Nascar Xfinity Pennzoil 15 (both at IMS), and closed out with the IMSA WeatherTech 240, taking place down at the Daytona International Speedway. On Sunday (July 5), the Nascar Cup Series will be back to speed around IMS. Events will be broadcast on NBC and NBC Sports.
